The key image is the sun. Thus sun is a positive force and its action is all about bringing to life the soldier as it does the seeds. In the second stanza the sun is associated with the whole act of creation and generation. However, this sun clearly does not accord with the traditional attributes of the Christian God , who the Bible states is able to give and take life, as well as restore life after death. But the sun cannot do what Owen desires, cannot bring the dead to life. Instead of symbolizing life, it comes to represent the meaninglessness of life.

Futility (poem) - Wikipedia

Wilfred Owen was a remarkable young man. The words Wilfred Owen uses are perfect to capture the pure despair of this situation. In the First World War there was a soldier named Wilfred Owen, he wrote many poems on the shocking truth of war. Wilfred Owen lets us feel the sadness of the death, while in Byrons poem things seem too colourful for sadness. The second poem, Futility, written by Wilfred Owen has taken a more modern attitude and war is shown as a mass destruction, with biblical references suggesting that man has made little moral progress. Some critics believed Wilfred Owen to be the most individual and best of the war poets. The last line of the poem is perhaps the harshest reference to the futility of human life and the coldness of war, especially in WWII.

The poet Wilfred Owen — along with his friend and mentor, Siegfried Sassoon — is now thought of as the poet who exposed the brutalities of trench warfare and the senseless waste of life caused by World War One. He was drafted to France in …. The poem, a simple sonnet, quietly recalls the mood of that campaign, in which unarmed, uneducated plowboys terrorized the great estates of the absent English overlords until they were hemmed in and mowed down by cavalry and cannon. At first, the rebellion was a romp; finally, it became a nightmare and a shame.
