Please join StudyMode to read the full document. Introduction: A deep foundation is a type of foundation distinguished from shallow foundations by the depth they are embedded into the ground. There are many reasons a geotechnical engineer would recommend a deep foundation over a shallow foundation , but some of the common reasons are very large design loads, a poor soil at shallow depth, or site constraints like property lines. There are different terms used to describe different types of deep foundations including the pile which is analogous to a pole , the pier which is analogous to a column , drilled shafts, and caissons. Piles are generally driven into the ground in situ; other deep foundations are typically put in place using excavation and drilling.

Abstract The paper describes the estimating settlements of bored piles foundation on the site of the Elektrenai power plant, Lithuania. The bored piles foundation supports equipment of the power plant consisting of the gas turbine, the steam turbine and the generator. The piling solution was adopted for the following reasons: i the insufficient capacity of the soil to support great stresses over it; ii high requirements of slab settlements and bearing capacity with regard to the main equipment in power plant. For settlement calculation five methods were employed, such as Bowles [1] and Schmertmann methods [2,3], the method described in EN [4—6] and NEN [7], and finite element method applied in Plaxis 3D Foundation package.
