However, a difficulty confronting education professionals in fulfilling this responsibility is the bewildering array of conceptualisations of intercultural competence that are currently available. Over the past twenty years or so, there has been a proliferation of different models of intercultural competence across the social sciences, in disciplines as diverse as management, health care, counselling, social work, psychology and education. These various models have recently been reviewed by Spitzberg and Changnon , who classify them into five types: 1 Compositional models, which identify the various components of intercultural competence without attempting to specify the relations between them — these models therefore simply contain lists of the relevant attitudes, skills, knowledge and behaviours which together make up intercultural competence. In their review, Spitzberg and Changnon observe that many of the terms used to describe intercultural competence in all five types of model e. Certainly, most of the models reviewed by Spitzberg and Changnon are underdetermined by the available evidence: they contain many speculative elements and, when they have been subjected to empirical examination, are typically tested in very restricted situations with limited numbers of participants drawn from only a small range of cultures or sometimes only a single culture. Compositional models make the fewest assumptions concerning the nature of intercultural competence, as they modestly attempt only to identify the various attitudes, skills, knowledge and behaviours which together make up intercultural competence, without speculating about the interconnections, casual pathways or developmental interdependencies between them.

Teachers possess a strong power in their own capacity to direct the learners in becoming responsible citizens. Their communal hard work act as a driving power by which the goals and objectives of an educational scheme are being achieved. As such, teacher quality must be taken into account to make such goals reachable. In an unstructured consultation with some administrators as to teacher capability, they considered manner towards work as the most favorable characteristic. The student respondents tagged being approachable and responsible among teacher traits as their top priority. Truly, the teacher is the key factor in the learning process.

The term linguistic competence refers to the unconscious knowledge of grammar that allows a speaker to use and understand a language. Also known as grammatical competence or I-language. Contrast with linguistic performance. As used by Noam Chomsky and other linguists , linguistic competence is not an evaluative term. Rather, it refers to the innate linguistic knowledge that allows a person to match sounds and meanings.
Cultural competence is defined as possessing the skills and knowledge necessary to appreciate, respect, and work with individuals from different cultures. It is a concept that requires self-awareness, awareness and understanding of cultural differences, and the ability to adapt to clinical skills and practices as needed. For instance, before my grandmother had passed, my family wanted to do a traditional prayer ceremony for her in the hospital. It is where we have a monk in the same room, doing the a Buddhist Prayer for peace. Indeed, with the help of the staff members on her floor, the nurses understood why my family request a monk to do a Buddhist Prayer and to have our whole family attends the prayer.
